Preliminary study: Svinesundbrua
The old Svinesund Bridge and the border - a destination that is a diamond in the rough. The feasibility study Svinesundsbron will focus on mapping the potential for further development of the area, the long-term goal is to establish a larger investment in the hospitality industry that in the long term benefits existing businesses and creates conditions for several new businesses. The feasibility study wants to invite residents and companies in the area to participate in a joint development of the area.
At the old Svinesund Bridge and the border, unique cultural and natural values were highlighted in connection with the implementation of the Interreg project Gränsen as an attraction. The area is a destination that is a diamond in the rough. It is very interesting from a regional, national and international perspective. The stately bridge, partly built of Bohus granite, is now also a state-worthy building and is on the State Transport Administration's list of memorable bridges. There are several hiking trails in the area, and the passage over Svinesund has a long and exciting history as a border crossing. Ever since the 16th century, customs duties have been imposed in the area. There are also clear traces and remains of when Charles XII stationed himself at the border before the attack on Norway in 1718, and from World War II when the then half-finished bridge was heavily guarded by German and Swedish soldiers.
The unique cultural and natural values found in the area are today very inaccessible. We believe there is great potential for developing the area around the old Svinesund Bridge into a cross-border tourist destination built on viable businesses. A cluster of destinations along the border is already attracting visitors, and there is potential for more. The Svinesund Bridge is a water boundary and is part of a cluster of border crossings with nearby Älgafallet in Tanum, Tresticklan and Kornsjø in Dals-Ed.
The long-term goal is to create an internationally attractive tourist destination that makes the Svinesund Bridge and the area's natural and cultural values accessible to visitors and residents. This means increased competitiveness and business opportunities for small and medium-sized companies near Svinesund. This feasibility study is a first step on the way there. The feasibility study will examine the conditions, obstacles and potential to be able to attract a suitable, not least sustainable, business establishment / investment in the hospitality industry. The feasibility study wants to involve residents and companies in the area to develop the facility in a future project and prepare a common vision for the area. The vision will govern what kind of large business investments are appropriate
